We are dismayed to see the Republican Town Committee flippantly dismiss the six Democratic candidates for the Board of Education as “activists." These women are parents who have spent countless hours serving our schools and our community, including Penny Rashin who's served on the Board of Education for 14 years. All of these women are known, respected, and trusted long-time residents who have done much to improve our town and the lives of our children.
We didn’t speak up about the several attack mailers, ads, and text messages; nor the misleading letter from our First Selectman; nor the blatantly false social media ads; nor even the photos we received of our lawn signs sandwiched between two “End Cancel Culture” signs (which was done anonymously and without consent of the property owner and is a direct violation of the property owner’s right to free speech); but the casualness with which they dismiss six hard working volunteers cannot be ignored.

It seems that the New Canaan RTC is being led by a group that does not represent the views of the vast majority of New Canaan Republicans. This RTC put our amazing schools at risk by recruiting and back-channel supporting four inexperienced candidates for the BOE, who had not so much as attended a BOE meeting or volunteered in our schools before deciding they were more qualified to run our schools (with more oversight!) than the competent incumbents they ousted in the caucus and recently “endorsed” as the reason our school district is ranked #1 in the state.
These candidates have insulted our teachers, spreading vague, anonymous accusations that our world-class educators are teaching inappropriate things, while refusing to provide any actual evidence. They said Dr. Bryan Luizzi needs more oversight, but have given no reasons as to why. They published a video where a supporter accuses the BOE and Dr. Luizzi of ignoring research about start times — the same resident who previously accused Dr. Luizzi and the BOE of not caring about children. They've been supportive of non-residents who show up at BOE meetings to cause a scene by refusing to wear masks. The Secretary of the RTC has accused teachers of being “left wing activists.”
Kindness matters? We agree. This behavior is not kind and is a threat to our excellent, happy, and nurturing schools in which our students are surrounded by teachers who feel valued and seen as partners in our children’s education. Many people before us have worked hard to build these schools and it makes us sick to see them devalued so carelessly.

This RTC is also spreading lies about the six Democratic candidates. The Row A candidates care enough about our schools to run for the position themselves so that voters have the option of voting for qualified candidates who have experience and respect for our schools. They have worked tirelessly for months to ensure voters are aware of the importance of this election and what is at stake.
To correct just some of the lies from the RTC: These candidates, all of whom are also parents, do not support regionalization and never would. In fact, they have sent testimony and even testified against regionalization on the floor of the General Assembly in 2019. They do not have a hidden agenda, and do not intend to indoctrinate our children with Marxist ideology.
The PTC did not cancel one of the Republican candidates to further the Democratic agenda. The Row A candidates do not intend to cancel gifted programming nor AP classes. And — we can’t even believe we have to say this — the Row A candidates are not going to bus students in from the Bronx.
Letter sent from First Selectman Kevin Moynihan with disinformation. Democrats are not “guaranteed a minimum of two seats under CT state law” but instead, no party is able to have more than a majority of seats. CHS 9-167a limits the maximum number of members who may belong to the same political party on boards, commissions, legislative bodies, whether elected or appointed.
Our Democratic, Row A candidates have a clear goal - continuing to ensure our schools remain world-class, and protecting our schools from national vitriol. These attacks, which are disappointingly fostered by New Canaan’s own RTC, are unfounded.
We are humbled to have such an enormous outpouring of bipartisan support. We hope more community members will speak up to say that you do not support the right turn in RTC leadership, nor do you condone this flagrant, dangerous attempt to create a highly partisan BOE that demeans our teachers and administration, and dismisses dedicated parent volunteers as activists.
Thank you for your support, and please forward to your networks to help us combat this divisive, destructive, and dangerous disinformation.
We have less than three days to go.
