unaffiliated voter thomas "tucker " clauss, JR endorses row a slate, encourages community to vote democratic on november 2nd
We were thrilled to receive this letter from unaffiliated voter Thomas "Tucker" Clauss, Jr, which unfortunately missed the New Canaan Advertiser's deadline this past week:
May I respectfully suggest that moderate Republicans and independents who are on the fence about this year's BOE election vote for the Democratic slate. As an independent, I usually find worthy candidates from each party and vote accordingly. This year, however, I see no merit in voting for any of the Republican BOE nominees and in fact see a fair number of good reasons to vote against them.
First, there is nothing in the Republican BOE candidates credentials or experience which would suggest to me that they would make a positive contribution to Board service. To the contrary, the tactics used to gain the RTC's nomination and the attack ad messages that have been disseminated in support of their candidacy suggest, to this observer, that they are not the right people to assume stewardship of our Town's greatest assets. At the RTC caucus, these candidates stoked fear about circumstances that do not exist in New Canaan and spouted xenophobic, divisive messages to oust excellent Republican incumbents. Thereafter there was a hue and cry raised about these hitherto unacceptable tactics in our BOE elections. In an apparent attempt to walk back from the approach they took at the caucus, the Republican slate of BOE candidates sent out a glossy mailer stating flatly, and perhaps hypocritically, that politics should be kept out of the process. Yet at or about the same time as this glossy mailer went out, proponents of the Republican BOE slate were distributing, under cover of darkness, a cowardly, anonymous and, to some, a racist flyer attacking the Democratic slate, once again misrepresenting facts and opinions in an attempt to stoke fear in the electorate. And, as if this was not enough dirt to sling, today I received in the mail another glossy flyer that drops all pretense of balance and mounts a full-on Trump-style attack against Democrats.
Our Board of Education and our schools are too good to be dragged through this partisan mud. Consequently, for the first time in a long time, I will not be voting for any of the Republican BOE candidates and will instead support the Democratic slate, all of whom seem singularly devoted to our schools and our students, not to a political tribe that relies on loathsome scare tactics. If enough voters feel the same, perhaps at their next caucus, perhaps the RTC will offer a slate of candidates better suited to New Canaan's BOE.
