We’re going to give it you straight, friends. This year is an election like no other. Reason is on the ballot. The future of our excellent school system is at stake.
New Canaan’s BOE has never been political and the results of nonpartisanship are clear: the focus is on students, common sense prevails and work gets done. Our agenda is our community.
Fortunately, we have endorsed an experienced team of highly qualified and trusted candidates. Our BOE candidates have been deeply engaged in school voluntarism and leadership on PTC / PTA Boards. Their collective professional experience spans the fields of law, finance, communications, consulting, marketing, real estate, social services, and education. They are long-time New Canaan residents with children of all ages currently in NCPS and with graduates of NCPS. Our three-term incumbent Penny Rashin has ushered NCPS through numerous important initiativesthat kept our district in the forefront of innovation.
As Democrats we know that we are “Better Together.” We are honored to put forward an exceedingly qualified and collaborative team to help our town keep moving forward. They have served on PTC/PTA Boards or as community leaders, as well as on the Board of Finance, Town Council, and as interim CFO. Kathleen Corbet, as Selectman, has helped steer our community through one of the most difficult years we have faced.
This is not the usual municipal election year. The stakes are high. We are up against well-funded opponents. Our candidates are committed to winning - they are putting all they have into this for the next 2 months -- canvassing, soliciting donations, asking friends to host parties, and reaching out to their personal networks.
This year, all funding has to come from the New Canaan Democratic Town Committee and its generous supporters, rather than from state and federal campaigns. It is expensive to get the word out about how important this election is - especially via mail and advertising. The costs associated with our outreach add up quickly!
Just one mailer costs $5,000, and we must send multiple. At ten dollars a sign, 500 lawn signs is a pricey expenditure. Even making calls and sending texts to voters makes a big dent in our budget, with each starting at $300 per month, conservatively. Add to that: events, overhead costs, and other incidentals, and you can see how we spend down to our last dollar every single election season. After all, what’s the point of running superb candidates if you can’t promote them to the best of your ability?
Our candidates depend upon your generosity and support, and we are grateful for any contribution you can make.
In solidarity and in gratitude, The New Canaan Democrats
