When U.S. Senate is in recess Chris Murphy is not

As the Associated Press reports, Connecticut’s U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is going around the country speaking to voters in districts their Republican members of Congress are shirking. In fact, Republican leadership has been telling its members to avoid town halls.

The AP described Sen. Murphy’s event in rural North Carolina where he spoke to a “packed concert hall” in what is a solid Republican district. “We are doing the job that these Republican congressman and senators won’t do,” he told the crowd. “I want to make sure that everywhere in every corner of this country, people are willing to stand up and fight.” The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine along with other media have also taken notice of Murphy’s sustained outreach to voters.

Mr. Murphy is attempting to explain in digestible sound bites that what is happening in Washington is very simple: It’s a billionaire takeover of American democracy,” the Times explains. Describing what sounds like a messaging marathon, the Times notes that Murphy is issuing videos on social media from his office, sustained texts on X, floor speeches and essays he writes on Substack, making the case that the Trump Administration is engaged on a sustained objective to govern in authoritarian ways, while cutting funds from programs Americans rely upon, such as Medicaid.
